Nadja is a wonderfully intelligent, sensitive, and well, uh....goofy girl!  She is Dawson's protege has done wonderfully at learning his job.  She has mastered retrieval, doors, lights, unloading the dryer, and other helpful tasks.  Nadja accompanied the Canine and Abled program and has been featured in many news stories and will also be featured in the upcoming Canine Ability dog training book.

Meet Our  Trainer's Canine Family
"When learning the dog training business, I studied many techniques and interned with many professionals.  I worked with K-9 patrol officers, military handlers, show dog handlers/breeders, service dog trainers, search and rescue teams, field trial dog handlers, and pet dog trainers.

I studied and became a surgical veterinary technician and learned the physical and psychological aspects of the canine mind.  I took a bit of valuable information from every trainer, veterinarian, and other canine instructors (including my best teachers, the canines themselves); molded each bit of information to fit my own style and personality, and combined them to form my own unique methods.

While I have learned from many consummate professionals, I've been very careful as to whom I choose to view as my role models.  I always took into consideration how my trainers' dogs behaved.  If a trainer's methods sounded good, yet their own dogs were out of control, this was not a viable role model for me.

I am passionate about my training, my dogs, and my clients' dogs.  I want that passion to show in everything I do; and so for my clients,   I put my training where my mouth is, so to speak... I don't expect anyone to take my word for what I can do with their dog...and so here, I call myself and my abilities on the carpet to demonstrate my own dogs' behaviors as a realistic model for what I can do for my clients' dogs"

Ahhh, April fresh!

Dewey
(Passed September, 2006)
When I first met him, Dewey was a totally untrained, malnourished, neglected 18 month-old rambunctious pup who weighed in at a whopping 85lbs.   I adopted him, and four years later, he returned the favor.  Due to his great size (120lb full grown), he was a great asset to me when I was recovering from a horrible car accident in 1998.

While still confined to my wheelchair, I taught him to pull it, then to "brace" when I was learning how to walk again, and to remain totally obedient in public places.  Dewey became my first service dog.  He alerted to my seizures, pulled my wheelchair and helped me learn to walk again...most importantly, he taught me how to live again!  It is with this gentle giant that the award-winning program, Canine and Abled, Inc. was founded... He is cherished in a love that transcends time.
Dawson is Dewey's protege and has been self-trained as well.  Dawson is a service dog whom I've taught to retrieve dropped objects, turn on/off lights, unload dryer, pull laundry baskets, open fridge and retrieve cans/containers, and alerts to water running and/or stove being left on (I have a traumatic brain injury and often have cognitive dysfunction).

In addition to his daily assistance to me, Dawson demonstrates his task repertoire in Canine and Abled demonstrations nationwide and is featured (with Dewey) in my first book, "Canine and Abled, Taking The Dis Out of Disabled".  He makes many public appearances to "sign" books and meet his fans ;-)
Gracie
Gracie is a Shih-tzu/Bichon mix and is our beloved, funny little fur person ;-)  Gracie is a certified therapy dog and performs fun tricks such as dancing, sitting up, agility, as well as advanced obedience; sit/down/stay/come on hand signals.  Proof positive that little dogs can learn just as well as the big guys! ;-)
